Music & Art

'Music in the soul can be heard by the universe'    LaoTsu

Music is vitally important for the general development of children, and the dedication of the music staff is testament to this. Providing engaging, fun and meaningful learning opportunities and experiences is core to what they do. Allowing students to also explore their own creativity and talents, music also aids academic development and any involvement in ensembles enhances social skills.

Students are supported by dedicated, professional instrumental tutors that are well known around the music scene in Hobart. It is with this breadth of variety that students can develop their skills in any genre or style of music they like. By enabling students to do this, they become more well-rounded and intelligent musically and academically.

Instrumental Tuition Information

Private instrumental tuition is offered by our highly experienced and respected instrumental tutors. A vast selection of instruments are offered and lessons occur weekly on a rotational basis. This is to ensure minimal disruption to core learning, but to also enable the students the flexibility to undertake instrumental tuition during school time.

It has been shown around the world that students who undertake learning a musical instrument in some form, demonstrate a more highly improved academic outcome and focus to general learning, so parents – and students – are encouraged to undertake this opportunity where possible.

Ensemble Rehearsal Schedule

There are several extra-curricular ensembles that occur here at St Virgil’s. Our dedicated staff bring a combined expertise of over fifty years performing and teaching experience and enthusiasm in developing the student’s skills in becoming the best musician they can.

Junior Choir (Junior School only)  Wednesday morning 8:30 – 9:00am

If you are interested in being involved in the Junior Choir as well as any of our smaller ensembles on offer (e.g. brass band, flute choir, saxophone ensemble, percussion ensemble, glee club) come and see any of the Music Department staff. If you are keen to be involved but there may be difficulties with transport, come and speak to us to see if alternative arrangements could be made.

Performance Opportunities

Assembly performance opportunities are regularly available to any interested students. Entrance and exit music, as well as a specific music item occur during each Prefect assembly. This is a wonderful way to show your skills to your peers, so come and see the Music Department staff to put your name on the list.

Lunchtime concerts feature class ensembles and small rock groups. If you are part of a group that is keen, or you are interested in forming a group for performing at one of the lunchtime concerts, come and see the music department.

All extra-curricular ensembles participate in the City of Clarence Eisteddfod, along with the annual Gala Concert. The Music Department is also developing opportunities for students involved in Stage band particularly, to undertake local and regional school tours, to further develop their performance skills.

Upcoming Events and Communication

Information and important details for any Music Department event, such as the annual Gala Concert, involvement in the School Fair, eisteddfod details and so forth, will be distributed directly through the College website, EdSmart Broadcasts, College app notifications, the College’s social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook) and student notices.
